Short answer: the Masca Gorge hike is one of Tenerife’s most spectacular routes, but it is not a casual walk and it is not something to improvise from Masca village. You need an official reservation, ID, the correct shared bus access from Santiago del Teide, a separate boat ticket from Masca Bay, closed mountain hiking footwear, water, and enough fitness to handle a high-difficulty route.
We are writing this guide because old Masca advice is dangerous now. Years ago, many visitors thought of the Masca trek as a famous downhill walk to the sea. Today the route is regulated, checked, timed, and dependent on transport and sea conditions. If you book it correctly, it can be a magnificent day. If you miss one requirement, you may simply be refused access.
Local verdict: Masca Gorge is worth doing only if you treat it like a real mountain route with rules. If you want an easy scenic stop, visit Masca village instead.
Last checked: 24 June 2026. Trail rules, prices, transport, boat operations, and closures can change. Always confirm on the official Masca Gorge Trail website before booking or travelling.

Do You Need A Ticket For Masca Gorge?
Yes. You need an official reservation for the Masca Gorge Trail. The entrance ticket is individual and non-transferable, and you must show identification at access control. The official booking page showed prices from EUR40.66 when checked, with special rates and free access conditions for some residents and federation members, but prices and conditions can change.
Do not rely on screenshots, old forum comments, or advice from before the current access system. The official booking website is the only place we would trust before choosing a date.
What Does The Masca Ticket Include?
The official ticket includes an allocated date and time to access the trail, safety and heritage information, monitoring and assistance, accident insurance, and loan of a protective helmet that must be returned at the end of the route.
What Is Not Included?
The ticket does not include everything you need for the day. Current official information says the shared transport from Santiago del Teide is not sold on the trail booking site, the boat ticket from Masca Bay is separate and obligatory for the descent ticket, and the return transfer from Los Gigantes to Santiago del Teide is not included.
Important: Do not book only the gorge ticket and think the rest will solve itself. The bus and boat are part of the real plan.
Masca Reservation: The Current Access Rule
As checked on the official site, the current model requires descent hikers to reach Masca by shared transport from Santiago del Teide on TITSA route 355. You must be at the Santiago del Teide pick-up point at least 1 hour before your booked descent time. You also need to arrive at the Masca Visitors’ Centre checkpoint 30 minutes before your slot for document and equipment checks.
The key change is this: access to the Masca Gorge Trail is not permitted for trail users arriving at the start by private vehicle. You must show proof that you used the required transport, or access can be refused.
Where Do You Park If You Drive To Santiago Del Teide?
The official getting-here page says that if you arrive in Santiago del Teide by private vehicle, you should park at the cemetery car park, then walk about 10 minutes to the TITSA bus stop meeting point. From there, route 355 takes about 20 minutes to reach Masca.
Can You Start The Hike From Masca If You Drove There?
No, not under the current trail access rules. For the regulated hike, arriving at the trail start by private vehicle is prohibited. This is not just a parking suggestion. It is an access condition.
Masca Bay And The Boat Ticket
For the descent option, the hike finishes at Masca Bay, where you leave by sea if conditions allow. The official booking information says you must buy a boat ticket separately and that the boat ticket should be no more than 4 hours after your reserved descent slot.
Here is the catch many visitors miss: boat departures from Masca Bay can close unexpectedly because of sea conditions. If that happens, visitors may have to return toward the start on foot from wherever staff notify them. This is why the official site keeps repeating that you need good fitness.
Masca Bay is not a beach plan: the official rules state that Masca Beach remains closed to the public. Treat the bay as a controlled route exit, not a swimming stop.
What Documents And Equipment Do You Need?
The official equipment page is strict. If you do not have the mandatory items, access can be refused. We would not try to negotiate this on the day.
Mandatory Documents
- ID document matching the ticket holder, including for minors.
- Trail entrance ticket for the booked time.
- Proof of having used the required shared transport from Santiago del Teide.
- Boat ticket from Masca Bay to the destination port.
- Supporting documents if claiming a resident, under-18, or federation-related rate.
- Minor authorisation form when required.
Mandatory Equipment
- Closed mountain hiking footwear or trekking shoes with suitable lugs.
- Suitable hiking clothing.
- Helmet, loaned by trail staff and returned at the end.
- At least 1.5 litres of water per person, because there is no drinking water on the trail.
- Energy bars, nuts, or similar food.
- Charged mobile phone.
- Specific medication if needed.
Sandals, smooth-soled shoes, and city trainers are a bad idea here. More importantly, the official trail staff can refuse access if your footwear does not meet the requirement.
Local Tenerife guide
Not every beautiful route should be improvised
If you want a Tenerife day that feels wild but still works, use our handcrafted guide. It helps you connect routes, timing, viewpoints, food stops, and quiet places without turning the island into a rushed checklist.
Is The Masca Trek Difficult?
Yes. The official classification is high difficulty. The trail includes rocky ground, ramps, steps, slippery sections, and the possibility of falling from height. It starts around 750 m above sea level and descends toward sea level with small intermediate climbs.
That does not mean only elite hikers can do it. It means you should be honest. If you struggle with heat, knees, balance, steep descents, or long rocky terrain, Masca Gorge may be a poor choice. There are many other Tenerife hikes with less logistics and lower consequence.
Who Should Skip The Masca Gorge Hike?
- Children under 8, because they are not admitted.
- Anyone without proper closed mountain hiking footwear.
- Visitors with poor fitness, reduced mobility, or balance problems.
- People who cannot handle a possible return on foot if the boat closes.
- Anyone who needs guaranteed timing after the hike.
- Travelers who only want a nice photo and a short walk.
- Visitors who do not want to manage bus, boat, ID, tickets, and equipment.
A Realistic Masca Gorge Day Plan
This is not a final timetable because official slots, buses, boats, and closures change. Use it as planning logic.
- Book the official Masca Gorge Trail descent slot.
- Book the boat from Masca Bay to the destination port for the correct window.
- Plan how you will reach Santiago del Teide and the route 355 pick-up point.
- If driving to Santiago del Teide, allow time to park at the cemetery car park and walk to the bus stop.
- Be at the pick-up point at least 1 hour before your booked descent slot.
- Arrive at the Masca Visitors’ Centre checkpoint 30 minutes before your booked time.
- Keep ID, trail ticket, bus proof, and boat ticket easy to show.
- Descend slowly. This is not a race.
- At Masca Bay, follow staff and boat operator instructions.
- From the landing port, plan your return to Santiago del Teide or your accommodation.
Masca Gorge Or Just Masca Village?
Many visitors should choose Masca village instead of the gorge. That is not a failure. The village, road, and viewpoints already give you a powerful west Tenerife experience. The gorge is for people who specifically want the route, accept the rules, and have the fitness for a mountain descent with sea-dependent exit logistics.
If you are still deciding, read our broader Masca village, road, parking and things to do guide. It explains how to visit Masca without turning the gorge into the whole point of the day.
Common Masca Gorge Mistakes
- Booking the trail but forgetting the boat.
- Driving to Masca and expecting to start the hike from there.
- Arriving at the Santiago del Teide pick-up point too late.
- Wearing shoes that look sporty but are not proper mountain hiking footwear.
- Underestimating the heat and bringing too little water.
- Planning the day around a guaranteed boat departure even though sea conditions can change.
- Thinking Masca Bay is a beach break.
- Assuming old route descriptions still apply.
